LIPO to Publish List of Expired Trademarks (2024–2025 & years prior)

The Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO) has announced the publication of expired trademarks from 2024-2025 and previous years will begin Monday, January 26, 2026.

This action is being undertaken in accordance with the Intellectual Property Act of 2016 and the Revised Administrative Trademark Regulation No. 001/TM/08/2018, which govern the registration, renewal, restoration, and management of trademarks in Liberia.

The published list comprises trademark registrations that lapsed between 2024, 2025 and the years preceding due to the failure of right holders to renew or restore their registrations within the statutory timeframes. In line with Section 10.9 of the Intellectual Property Act, affected proprietors were afforded a six-month statutory grace period following expiration to complete renewal procedures, subject to the applicable late renewal surcharge.

“This publication demonstrates LIPO’s commitment to transparency, good governance, and the integrity of the national trademark registry,” said Hon. Garmai Koboi, Director General of LIPO. “It also provides critical information to businesses, investors, and legal practitioners seeking to assess trademark availability and avoid potential conflicts.”

Under the Intellectual Property Act of 2016, trademark registration in Liberia is valid for ten (10) years from the filing date and may be renewed for successive ten-year terms. A six-month grace period is permitted for late renewals, subject to an additional surcharge of fifty percent (50%). Upon expiration of this grace period, the legal right to restore the trademark ceases.

“We therefore urge trademark proprietors, rights holders, and legal practitioners to immediately verify the status of their trademarks and take appropriate steps to renew registrations where eligibility remains,” Hon. Koboi added.

The expired trademark list contains key registration details, including registration numbers, trademark names, classes of goods and services, original registration dates, and expiration dates. Trademarks appearing on the list no longer enjoy exclusive statutory protection, thereby creating the opportunity for new applications for identical or similar marks within the same classes, subject to examination and compliance with applicable legal requirements.

The 2024–2025 and earlier years expired trademark list is available on LIPO’s official website and may also be accessed at LIPO’s headquarters located at the Old Labor Ministry Building, UN Drive, Monrovia.
