Hon. Clarence H. Cole Deputy Director General for Copyright represent LIPO at the NAEAL film making partnership symposium.

He presented on promoting our Culture and tourism through the movie industry with government support. It is an undeniable truth that our culture is being gradually swept under the carpet of society if not destroyed. Culture plays a significant role in shaping the identity and unity of a nation, and in the case of Liberia, upholding its cultural heritage is essential for maintaining social cohesion and preserving the country’s unique history and traditions.

The following are reasons why we must focus on upholding our cultural heritage:

IDENTITY AND UNITY:

Culture serves as a reflection of the values, beliefs, and customs that define a society. In Liberia, the diverse cultural practices of its various ethnic groups, such as the Kpelle, Bassa, and Vai, and other tribes contribute to the rich tapestry of the nation’s identity. By upholding and celebrating these cultural traditions, Liberians can foster a sense of pride in their heritage and promote unity among different ethnic groups. Today if not all, most of the young generation lost their sense of belongingness. They cannot speak their own tribe not understanding the traditions. With the movie industry filming these cultures for educational and promotional purposes can go a long way in promoting our cultural heritage.

PRESERVING HISTORY AND TRADITIONS:

Liberia has a long and complex history, including its origins as a settlement for freed American slaves, its establishment as an independent republic, and its struggles with civil war and political instability. By preserving traditional cultural practices, such as storytelling, music, dance, and art, Liberians can pass down their history and heritage to future generations, ensuring that their traditions are not lost or forgotten.

Promoting Cultural Exchange and Understanding:

By upholding its cultural traditions, Liberia can also participate in cultural exchange with other nations and promote mutual understanding and respect among different cultures. This can help combat stereotypes and misconceptions about Liberia and its people and foster greater appreciation for the country’s unique cultural contributions.

Economic Development:

Culture can also play a crucial role in driving economic development and promoting tourism in Liberia. By promoting traditional crafts, music, dance, and cuisine, Liberia can attract visitors and generate revenue for local communities. Additionally, cultural tourism can help to create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the country. To sum it up, upholding our culture in Liberia is essential for preserving the country’s identity, history, and traditions, promoting unity and understanding among its people, and driving economic development. Additionally, by valuing and celebrating our cultural heritage, Liberia can continue to thrive as a diverse and vibrant nation.

We remain committed to supporting the Movie Industry as Deputy Director for Copyright as we encourage you to protect your work; from the scripts to the final project.

Together we all can make it work. A better creative industry for all.
